Fla. consumers to get reduced solar rebates

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Oct. 6, 2011 – Floridians finally are getting rebates they were promised for buying solar energy systems two years ago.

They just won’t be getting as much as promised.

The state on Tuesday began sending out 8,800 rebates that each will be 52 percent of the requested amount. That’s because the response was greater than expected and the program ran out of money in 2009.

The Florida Legislature last year appropriated nearly $29 million more but still not enough to pay full rebates. Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said he made the rebates a priority since his department inherited the program three months ago.

Putnam said his staff approved applications based on documentation from consumers and utilities.

The rebates were calculated by dividing the total dollars available by the number of approved applications.
